Ten Tips and the Secret to Style!

Style is a Verb!

To Style, is to Design, to Form, to Create!

How exciting! How scary?!

It may be tempting, but you cannot buy style. You can buy someone else's style. That is not going to satisfy. It's like buying into someone else's aesthetic, values, and goals. It will leave you spent emotionally and financially. You are better than that. You deserve to style your own life, including your clothing.

But, I'm not that...fill in the blank_.

Is your excuse that you aren't that vain? Yes, you are. Is it that you are not wealthy enough to have style? Yes, you are. Is it that you aren't pretty enough? Yes, you are. Is it that you are not worthy enough? Yes, you are. Is it that you just don't care what people think when they see you? Yes, you do. You may be self-deceiving yourself because it is an uncomfortable truth that everyone, including yourself, judges on appearance. Even if you are blind. Yes, being without sight, does not stop someone from judging how you smell, how your clothing feels, and how your energy comes across.

Energy?

Your energy, your attitude, and your mood are all in alignment with your current style. Don't think so? Try visualizing yourself putting on the worst, ugliest, most uncomfortable outfit you can imagine and trying to feel good either by yourself or in front of others. Now imagine yourself in the opposite. Don't know what that looks like yet? Don't worry, you will if you are willing, and despite what you have heard, it is not as difficult as you may think.

But, I am already good enough.

Yes, you are. Style is a verb, remember. It is something you do. You don't have to change your style, and your style will not change you. That is the point. Your style is already working for you to communicate You to the world and even to yourself. This will either thrill you or freak you out. Already have a pretty amazing style? Awesome, then you know the secret. C'mon. I already told you the secret to style (see the main title). Style is a Verb!

Work sounds like an effort. I can hear you now, "Wait a minute, this sounds like work. Work is something I have too much of already." Me, too! The good news is that you are already doing the work. The work may just not be aligned with where you want it to be with your authentic awesome self, your stellar goals, and your beautiful values.

Guess What?

You are already communicating exactly how you want with your style. You are already saying something. It just may not be having the effect on others that you think it is. Style is something that you can control...to a point. Style is our non-verbal communication. We control what we say and how we say it, but we cannot control how someone will receive it. Just like our words (verbal) and our gestures and tone (non-verbal), our style should be intentional. You alone are responsible for your words, actions, and style.

Bonus Points!

Here is your reward for sticking with me, so far. Style is a verb, yes, but great style...style that makes you feel like you are in alignment with your awesomeness, and is communicating that unique self to the world, has to be intentionally and consistently in alignment with that truth. You see, you can have a goal of having great style (noun) but fail unless you are practicing (verb) great style. So what is a great style going to look like in practice, to express the most awesome you?

Ten Instructions!

  1. First, feel free to substitute the words "great" or "awesome" that I use, with your own words that light you up!
  2. Write down the words you currently feel inside and about your wardrobe.
  3. Now, write down any words you would like to feel that are different.
  4. Think about your favorite things (currently or from the past if you still love them): sunsets, seasons, kittens, strawberries, articles of clothing or accessory, car, building, artwork, etc.
  5. Write down at least 5-10.
  6. Describe in detail what you like about them specifically. Example: I like my kitten, because she has mysterious eyes and a mischievous temperament, and she makes me laugh when her gray tail twitches.
  7. What do your descriptions say to you about your values, aesthetics, and feelings?
  8. Take the top ten things you want your style to express about you, write them down, and own them.
  9. Don't worry if these things seem strange or if anyone will judge you. Just don't judge yourself. These are your values, your aesthetics, and your feelings.  These represent you, at least for now.
  10. Keep Styling!

The Take Away!

Style is a Verb! Style is your ongoing expressive work because this is your life to create. Your values, aesthetics, and feelings may evolve, but they are yours alone. Whisper or shout them with your style. Communicate them in ways you deem useful, and appropriate to your own situation and surroundings. Own your style the way you own every other part of yourself.
