Got Problems? Try this Problem-Solving Template

Got Problems? Try this Problem-Solving Template

Wouldn't it be nice to have instructions for life? More specifically, a method for figuring out how to deal with issues as they arise and problems?

If you can think of at least one real solution for a perceived problem, then you don't really have a problem, but an opportunity for action.

The tricky part is untangling ourselves from the emotional story we tell ourselves surrounding the issue at hand.

So, get objective, and get curious about your problem. Set down the story at least long enough to run it through this series of questions as a kind of problem-solving template.
  1. What is the perceived problem/issue? Just naming it, is powerful.
  2. Is it even your problem to solve? Whose problem is it? Maybe it is not your problem to own.
  3. Which of your values does it uphold vs. reject? What's your trigger?
  4. Is it really about a different issue/problem altogether?
  5. Is this a thing or a distraction from the real thing/bigger thing?
  6. Who is this affecting?
  7. Who could assist in solving this problem?
  8. Who is opposing a solution?
  9. Where/When have you seen this before?
  10. Is this happening now? We can only solve things in the present.
  11. Could it be solved?
  12. What is delaying or preventing the solution?
  13. Do you have any responsibility for the problem?
  14. Do you have any power to solve the problem?
  15. What small thing can you do to either let it go or take the first step toward a solution?
Nothing is neutral. I get it, we have opinions, triggers, and feelings about everything. It can be exhausting. My best advice whether the problem is yours or someone else's to solve, or if it is just something that seems unsolvable, is to take all of your concerns to God in prayer.
