Blinded by your own B.S. (belief system)?

The answer is yes. This is because you are human. So take a deep breath and let's get into it.

We have all developed cognitive biases (see list below). These heuristics (mental shortcuts) help us to navigate the world and make sense of new information, based on our previous understanding of old information.

The Danger

If we do not regularly question our beliefs and biased thinking, we are in danger of irrational thinking, resulting in illogical actions. Our minds are not as trustworthy in sorting out information, as we would like to think. Sometimes we even dismiss new information, because we are paying attention to something else. There are distractions everywhere.

We are all Distracted Drivers

When we are distracted, and miss something visually, this is Change Blindness and an example would be texting while driving (the distraction), missing a changing signal, and running a red light. 

You are the driver in your life, so consider your current distractions, and how those are blinding you from essential changes around you. If you have people that depend on you, how much more important is it for you to be undistracted and fully aware?

The Cure

The treatment is ongoing awareness, the cure (not the band) is realizing that reality is not always what you think it is, and sometimes it is not even close.

Disintegration by The Cure (the band) is a song about the pain of shattered illusions.

There is a saying about the truth setting you free, and another about it setting you free after pissing you off, first. The truth may get you mad, but ignoring facts that don't conform to your preferred reality or for the comfort of your biases, leads straight to madness. The truth can set you free, but you must choose to value truth above your own bias.
